CHAPTER TEN
SHE watched him dress. Reid knew she was waiting for him to say something. He let her wait. The feeling of being manipulated was strong, and he hated it.
If it was jealousy driving Gina, it was amazing what jealousy could inspire a woman to do. Last night she had shed inhibitions as though they had never existed. She’d given him fantastic sex. What he’d put her through the previous night certainly hadn’t been lost on her, a fact he found intensely disturbing.
What was real and what wasn’t? The change in her was too abrupt, too extreme for him to believe in it. He wondered how long the act would last. Until she felt the danger of Paige was over and done with?
Strange how she had zeroed in on Durley House. It was obvious that nothing he said was going to divert her suspicions about it. Which meant falling in with her plan to accompany him on the trip if he wanted to keep their marriage intact. He no longer had a choice. He wasn’t about to risk a divorce action.
‘Have you tried a waterbed, Reid?’
He finished tying his shoelaces and stood up. She was lying on his side of the bed he had criticised, completely naked, hugging a pillow as though she was missing him to curl up against. It put a tightness in his chest and an ache in his groin that he could well do without.
His first wife had used sex as a weapon. Did all women use it to get what they wanted? He would never have thought it of Gina. For her to go on with it, even after he’d given her an out... Was it pride, loss of face, disbelief that he’d keep his word about marriage security if he had sex with another woman, or something more primal? Possessiveness was an insidious instinct, demanding far more than it should.
‘Forget the bed,’ he said. ‘If you’re coming to Europe with me, you’ll have more than enough to do in the next few days.’
Her face lit with relief. ‘You don’t mind my coming?’
He gave her a hard look. ‘Don’t expect me to change my plans, Gina, because I won’t. You’ve forced this on me. Just don’t mess me up while we’re over there.’
‘I won’t.’ She grinned with delight in having won. ‘I’ll make it good for you, I promise.’
He nodded and left her, unable to quell a fierce hope that the change would prove real and lasting. Their marriage would be almost perfect if it did.
Take one night at a time, he advised himself. The truth will reveal itself soon enough.
